Cycling keeps me sane!
Novice cyclist Pip decided to try biking to work last year when Love to Ride started its Cycle September challenge 2016 and she’s not looked back. Here’s her story…
Why did you try cycling to work during Cycle September?
I was already doing a bit of exercise to improve my health and fitness, but I hadn’t really thought doing cycling until I saw the Love to Ride campaign at work. I borrowed a bike from a colleague and it wasn’t nearly as hard as I thought. It’s about 5 miles so it’s the perfect distance to feel like I’m having a bit of a work out before I get to work.
What do you get out of cycling to work?
Since the first Love to Ride challenge, I’ve been cycling to work once or twice a week and I love it. I have a stressful job with lots going on in my personal life, so I find the journey to work a great way to process everything in my head before I start a day’s work. I think it’s kept my mental health in check through a really difficult time.
I think we’re really lucky to have so many cycle routes in this area, so cycling here feels really safe. It’s given me a lot more confidence to go out with my son as well, and now we go cycling on holiday and do longer distances, which I never thought I’d do a year ago!
Any words of advice?
Check out the cycle routes and rediscover your area. We’re lucky to have so many dedicated cycle paths to use. It’s a beautiful part of the world and getting around by bike is much safer and easier than you might have thought.
